Cladding Safety Solutions for Hamilton Marino

Making Victorians safer by reducing the risk associated with combustible cladding on residential apartment buildings

Since 2020 Energy Lab has been working collaboratively with Hamilton Marino on numerous Cladding Safety Victoria projects across the Melbourne CBD.

Facade rectification works include the targeted removal and replacement of combustible Foam and Aluminium Composite Panel from construction surfaces that form part of the thermal envelope of a building.

The team at Energy Lab have designed and documented bespoke Performance Solutions based on the National Construction Code for document approval for rectification permits.

Performance Solutions range in scope and complexity depending on the scope of material yet consistently demonstrate an increase in thermal performance of the facade system when compared to the current as-built form.

Bakehouse Terraces by JAM Architects

Traditional terrace homes reinterpreted for today, these fourteen architecturally designed terrace homes offer the opportunity to live in one of Melbourne’s most sought after neighbourhoods.

JAM Architects has drawn on the heritage character of North Fitzroy, the laneway context of this location, and the needs of changing contemporary lifestyles to create a collection of modern terrace homes.

Energy Lab completed all town planning and building permit documentation to facilitate an enhanced level of energy efficiency.

Prahran Hotel by Techne Architects

National Commendation by the Australian Institute of Architects

The corner pub is an iconic and much-loved staple of inner Melbourne’s architectural streetscape and the streamlined Art Deco building of the Prahran Hotel is a favourite meeting place. This delightful project retains the original building but opens it up to a bold new extension organized around a double-height space and an inner courtyard.

“The answer came in a facade composed of enormous industrial concrete pipes big enough to contain seating booths. The concrete pipes are stacked vertically like an oversized wine rack and make a dramatic visual statement on both the interior and exterior”

East Street House by Kerstin Thompson Architects

Commissioning the design of a new home is a process that involves a multitude of milestones, from finding the right site and establishing a brief to negotiating during design and then building.

For many clients, this process ends once they move in. When the design has been guided and shaped by the owners’ ideas of who they are and how they want to live, it is fair to assume that the clients’ “dream home” will meet expectations from the day they move in.

Wayss Youth Transition Hub by Bent Architecture

Designed for social needs

The project was commissioned by the Victorian Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH) for Wayss, a charity that provides family violence and housing support in Melbourne’s outer eastern suburbs. The project comprises six one-bedroom and two two-bedroom dwellings, an administration building and a multipurpose space, all arranged around a communal garden.

As a youth transition hub, it is designed for young people between 17 and 21 years old who are at risk of homelessness due to family violence, mental illness or other crises. It is a place where they can be supported in developing long-term independence.

Richmond Warehouse by Techne Architects

“Retaining the warehouse aesthetic was really important to Dianne and Frank. That was made pretty clear from the outset,” says Steve McKeag, project architect at Techne Architects.

Indeed, it is those existing elements that give the project much of its character – a network of black steel struts crisscrosses the space, piercing the beautifully solid blockwork of the original structure.

On the east-facing street frontage, multi-paned, steel-framed windows gaze at the train line, just visible behind the fronds of the tall peppercorn trees opposite.

Aesop | Emporium Melbourne by Kerstin Thompson Architects

Calm and restrained with extensive use of spotted gum timber.

Emporium Melbourne is the long-awaited infill piece in Melbourne’s Golden Mile, the stretch of retail properties extending from La Trobe Street all the way down the hill to Flinders Street.

The opening of the new centre makes it possible, for the first time, to walk from La Trobe Street’s Melbourne Central shopping centre down to Bourke Street Mall without your feet touching the ground.

The Terminus Hotel by Techne Architects

Aficionados of Melbourne’s pub scene will fondly remember the mint-green Terminus Hotel, a classic drinker’s destination in the landscape of inner-urban Melbourne. After being closed for some time, the pub was recently purchased and given a new lease of life by prominent Melbourne hotelier Sand Hill Road in collaboration with its long-time architectural partner Techné Architecture and Interior Design.

Messing with a classic is a process fraught with danger, but even a cursory examination demonstrates that the team has managed to breathe new life into the shell without sacrificing the idiosyncratic vibe that made the place so special.
